[ a polite clearing of the throat ]

[ footsteps disappearing into the sand ]

– I’ve been shot.

[ dripping water in the deep echoes of a cave ]

[ a fish jumps, then splashes back into the water ]

[ seats creaking as people become restless ]

[ an iPhone vibrating in the front pocket of a backpack ]

[ ♪ Below Deck Theme ♪ playing on a television in the next room ]

[ an excited gasp ]

[ the high-pitched whine of a drill grinding inside your head ]

[ a page of a book slowly being turned ]

[ a pen clicks ]
[ a second click ]

[ a cough stifled by a sleeve ]

[ someone whispering “I love you” directly into your ear ]
[ a zipper unzips ]

[ a car honks from behind ]

[ light, unobtrusive squeaks of a slightly rusty bike chain ]

[ ♪ soft, pensive piano music ♪ ]

[ laboured, rhythmic heavy pulls of breath ]

[ a voice filled with shock and disbelief ]

[ a train passes causing everything in the immediate environment to rattle ]
[ the engine’s siren changes pitch as it passes ]
[ the constant rhythmic grinding of metal on metal that gradually fade into the distance ]

[ the hustle and bustle of an art auction in full swing ]

[ soft, delicate laughter ]

[ horse hooves on dry earth that slowly get closer ]

[ low, rolling thunder vibrating glass in a window frame ]

[ snaps and pops of wood cracking in a roaring fire ]

[ high-pitched beeps that transform into the low, mechanical drone of a microwave ]

[ ♪ Bunkhouse Theme ♪ from the Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid OST playing on airbuds drowning out students arguing about what will or will not be on their exam ]

[ change being deposited as the hydraulics release and the bus pulls away from the stop ]

[ a couple cries as they embrace ]

[ buzzing static of a CB radio ]
[ choppy transmission ]
– Breaker 1-9, this is Little Buddy.
– You got your ears on?
– 10-4, Little Buddy.

[ a stomach grumbles loudly ]

[ deep visceral grunt preceded by change hitting the bottom of a paper coffee cup ]

[ a ceramic cup and saucer collide, the quiet sipping of tea ]
